Our gorgeous new PAINTERLY PRINTS are colored with a unique process that relies as much on the weather as the textile artists who create them. We thought you'd enjoy learning more about the various steps involved in making these designs: First, the 100% cotton cloth is made ready with a special bleaching process, allowing the color to better penetrate the cloth rather than remain only on its surface. | | Next, the fabric is tied with string to a rectangular tube frame whose length is equal to the length of the fabric piece to be dyed. This allows the artists to paint the entire length at once, preventing streaking or other color variations between the wet and already dried areas. | | | | | The artists begin to apply the color, with one person assigned to each color in the design, so that a 6-color design requires 6 artists working in rotation. Natural design variations are the result of each artist's own hand, as well as the amount of paint on the brush in a particular area. | | Finally, weather is the most important factor. Bright sun allows the artists to better control the patterns (including intentional crackle effects and more), and insures a quicker drying time, while cloudy weather results in increased color spread and a longer drying time. You could say that in the process of making our PAINTERLY PRINTS, nature is the final designer! | |
