Patriotic Quilts |
 |
Fueled in
part by the upcoming 150th Anniversary of the Civil War
I the U.S., patriotic quilts have found their way to the
forefront of quilting once again, as evidenced in our CIVIL
WAR TRIBUTE collection & BOM
project. You’ll find nostalgic quilt fabrics
reminiscent of the fabrics from that era, as well as
classic red, white & blue palettes, in both antiqued
and present-day versions – see the AMERICAN
PATRIOT COLLECTION. |
Quilting & History |
| The 150-year
commemoration of the American Civil War approaches in
2011, and with it, interest in quilting as a form of
historical documentation is peaking, and quilters are
taking plenty of time to plan heirloom quality quilts
and other projects to seek the best of reproduction
fabrics, patterns and inspiration. Judie Rothermel's CIVIL
WAR TRIBUTE captures the period, complete with its
own 110" wide BASIC
BACKS and accent colors, BUTTER
CHURN & CHEDDAR. Another great example is Kansas
City Star's block-of-the-month program commemorating
2010 as the 90th anniversary of women's right to vote in
the U.S. It features a variety of Marcus fabrics in both
reproduction and Aunt Grace versions. |

"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" |
 |
This way of
life is nothing new for resourceful quilters, and has
been embraced by others, creating a new population of
beginners. From this we see a variety of related trends,
including scrappy quilts and eco-friendly fabrics like OASIS
CANVAS. And check out our feature on Furoshiki,
Japanese fabric wrapping that's easy, versatile and much
prettier than plastic bags! |
Brown Gets Around! |
| More and
more, we're seeing brown as the new neutral, mixing with
pink, as demonstrated in CLOSE
TO MY HEART, Faye Burgos' "pink ribbon"
inspired collection, as well as her REDWOOD
group, where it works with deep reds, and even in
reproduction themes, like the browns Paula Barnes uses
with more traditional Americana colors in BONNIE
BLUE'S AMERICA. |

Handbag Update |
 |
The
bag-making trend shows no signs of slowing down, but
instead continues to grow in exciting new ways. New
sewing enthusiasts are stitching up simple grocery totes
and other "green" carryalls, while those with
more experience create patchwork, appliquéd, and highly
embellished works of art. Try our free
eco-friendly shopping tote project. |
Delicate Colors |
| Both
contemporary trends and more traditional fabric designs
have embraced a softer color palette this season,
including looks like COTILLION
by Faye Burgos. |
