American Patriot

Sewing
  1. Star Blocks: Position a fabric G square on the right side of a 3" x 5-1/2" fabric I rectangle. Sew in a diagonal line from corner to corner on fabric G. Trim away excess fabric 1/4" from seam allowance, fold out resulting fabric G triangle and press seam. Repeat on the opposite side of the fabric I rectangle. Make 32 star point units. Sew a star point unit to each side of a fabric E square. Fold out star point unit and press seam. Sew a fabric I 3" square to each end of the remaining star point units and sew to top and bottom of the center section of the star block. Fold out and press to complete block. Make 8 blocks. Repeat with fabric E 3" squares, fabric F 5-1/2" squares and fabric I 3" squares and 3" x 5-1/2" rectangles. Make 5 blocks.
  2. Square In Square blocks: Position a 3" fabric J square in one corner of a 5-1/2" fabric C square. Sew across the fabric J square in a diagonal line. Trim 1/4 " from stitching line, fold out the resulting triangle and press the seam line. Repeat, sewing a fabric H square in each corner of the fabric C square. Make 4 units. Sew a fabric B triangle to each side of the center unit, then a fabric H square in each corner. Make 4 blocks in this fabric combination. Repeat the process sewing a 3" fabric H square in each corner of a fabric C square, then trim and press. Next sew a fabric B triangle to each side of the center unit and then a fabric J triangle in each corner. Make 8 blocks in this fabric combination.
  3. Refer to the color photograph and arrange the finished blocks in five rows with five blocks in each row. The star blocks with red star points are around the outside edges of the quilt top and the star blocks with the blue star points are in the center of the quilt. Alternate the star blocks with the Square in Square blocks.
  4. When the rows are finished sew them together to complete the quilt center.
  5. Sew the fabric H vertical borders to opposite sides of the quilt, then the fabric H horizontal borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.
  6. Center and sew the fabric H borders to each of the quilt with an equal amount of border fabric overlapping at each end. Miter the corners and trim away excess fabric.

Finishing
  1. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing. Baste, then quilt the layers together.
  2. Fold the binding strips over lengthwise and press the fold line. Line up raw edges of binding with raw edges of quilt top and sew in place. Turn binding to back of quilt and stitch in place.
