Judie Rothermel's AUNT GRACE CLASSICS collection sews up beautifully in an heirloom lap quilt design with true vintage appeal by Charlotte O'Leary of Quilting Hens. Her easy blocks blend together to create this unique design, while keeping the beginning quilter in mind. For the border, choose your favorite Aunt Grace Classic print, to complement the overall décor.

Finished Size: 46" x 58"

Fabric Requirements
5/8 yd various pinks (sample uses 5)
5/8 yd various blues (sample uses 5)
3/8 yd various reds (sample uses 3)
3/8 yd various lavenders (sample uses 3)
3/8 yd various greens (sample uses 3)
3/8 yd various yellows (sample uses 3)

Snowball Block Construction:
(24) 6" blocks
Cut: 24 - Ivory squares 6-1/2" X 6-1/2"
96 - '30's prints 2-1/2" X 2-1/2"
Pinks - 27
Blues - 22
Greens - 19
Yellows - 11
Lavenders - 9
Reds - 8
Place an ivory square right side up with a '30's print square right side down, aligning at one corner of the ivory square, as shown in diagram. Stitch diagonally from corner to corner on the small square as shown. Trim corner to a 1/4" seam allowance. Press seam toward the '30's print.
Tip: When pressing, press seam open then press to the darker fabric side. This step prevents the formation of a fold at the seam line and makes for a smoother finished project.

Place the Aunt Grace print squares as indicated in the color-coded diagram showing solid color blocks (see end.) Continue in the same manner for the other three corners of the 6 1/2" block. For easier layout, work on a design wall design wall, alternating Snowball blocks with spaces for the Nine-Patch block.

9 Patch Block:
(24) 6" blocks
Cut (1) 2-1/2" strip of each print from selvage to selvage, for a total of (117) 2-1/2" squares

Pink 31
Blue 31
Green 24
Yellow 10
Lavender 9
Red 12

(6) 2 1/2" strips of ivory solid from selvage to selvage, for a total of (96) 2-1/2" squares
Tip: Do not use selvages in your quilt. Either cut them off before cutting squares, or avoid them when cutting near the end of your strip.

Nine-Patch Block Construction:
(24) 6" blocks
It is easier to create the pattern for the colors of this quilt if you create a nine-patch and then a snowball to match the colors of the corners of the nine-patch. It will take some patience to get all the colors correct.

There are 6 blocks across to create a row and 8 rows up and down, for a total of 48 blocks.

Since each nine-patch is a different color, it is just as easy to cut the 2-1/2" squares instead of trying to work with strips.

Borders:
The first small border is cut 1-1/2" from selvage to selvage. When sewn into the quilt it will be a 1" border. A blue solid was put in our quilt, however any color that is in the quilt may be used or a color to match the nursery.

Piano Key Border 4-1/2"

Cut Strips for border 1-1/2" from selvage to selvage. Cut one strip of each fabric. Sew all the strips together one after another long ways. This will create a large piece of striped fabric. Cut the strips of fabric 4-1/2" wide across the width of the strips. Now sew one 4-1/2" piece to the next to create the outside border. The top and bottom should use 42 keys and the length top to bottom should require 54 keys.

This border is sewn on as though it were a log cabin type block. At each corner start sewing about 10 keys even with the corner of the first border. Then go back to the opposite end of the border strip and sew the border on to match the edge of the border that you started sewing at the edge. Do the same at all sides to create this delightful key board style border. With the keys sewn in the long strips and then cut, it will save a lot of construction time on this border.

Layer quilt top and the batting and backing of your choice, then quilt as desired.
