Binding: 2/3 yd fabric C, cut (8) 2-1/4" x wof strips and sew together end-to-end.

Sewing
  1. Checkers blocks - For each block sew (4) 2-1/2" squares of one fabric and (4) 2-1/2" squares of a contrasting fabric into a rectangle. Sew 2 border 2-1/2" x 8-1/2" strips to each of the long sides and (2) 2-1/2" x 8-1/2" border strips to the top and bottom of the checkers block. Make blocks in fabric combinations as follows: Block 1: fabric A and fabric F squares with fabric K borders, make 4. Block 2: fabric C and fabric I squares with fabric D borders, make 3. Block 3: fabric M and L squares with fabric C borders, make 3. Block 4: fabrics M and J squares with fabric E border, make 3.
  2. Shadow Box blocks - For each block sew the 4-12" pieces on each side of the fussy cut fabric B squares, and 8-1/2" strips on top and bottom. Using second border fabric sew the 8-1/2" strips on opposite sides of the block and the 12-1/2" squares on the top and bottom of the block. Exception: (2) blocks with fabric H borders have one wide border. Make combinations as follows: Block 1: Square B with border H, make 2. Block 2: square B with borders N and F, make 2. Block 3: square B with borders M and L, make 2. Block 4: square B with borders J and N, make 3. Block 5: square B with borders D and A, make 3.
  3. Refer to the color photo to sew the blocks together. There are 5 rows of 5 blocks alternating the checkers blocks with the Shadow Box blocks. Rows 1, 3 and 5 begin and end with a checkers block. Add a fabric G spacing strip to each end of these rows. Rows 2 and 4 begin and end with a shadow box block and DO NOT need a spacing strip. Alternate the odd and even numbered rows to sew the center of the quilt together.
  4. Using fabric G vertical borders to opposite sides of the quilt, then the horizontal borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.
  5. Sew the fabric C vertical borders to opposite sides of the quilt, then the horizontal borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.
  6. Sew the fabric H vertical borders to opposite sides of the quilt, then the horizontal borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Finishing
  1. Reversible quilt back assembly: Sew rows 1 and 3 with patchwork panel O on the left and heart panel B on the right with 24-1/2" vertical sashing I between them. Sew row 2 with heart panel B on the left and patchwork panel O on the right with vertical sashing I between them. Sew the rows together, separating them with the (2) 2-1/2" sashings. Trim sashings to size. Sew vertical borders to opposite sides of the quilt top and trim to size. Sew horizontal borders I to top and bottom of quilt top and trim to size. Backing should measure approximately 2" larger on each side than quilt top.
  2. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing. Baste and quilt the layers together.
  3. Fold the binding strips over lengthwise and press the fold line. Line up raw edges of binding with raw edges of quilt top and sew in place. Turn binding to back of quilt and stitch in place.
