Star Journey
by Jeanne Poore

Take a Kansas-inspired quilting journey with Jeanne Poore, using her new Heartland II collection. Jeanne designed "Star Journey" especially for our website, allowing you to mix and match the creams, reds and accent prints as you like.

Fabric Requirements:
Assorted cream backgrounds - total 3 yards
Assorted reds - total 1 yard
Assorted medium to dark prints- total 1 1/3 yards
Red inner border - 1/2 yard
Striped middle border - 2 1/4 yards
Outer Border - 2 1/4 yards
Binding- 2/3 yard
Backing - 5 1/2 yards

Cutting:
(Total 48 blocks - 8" finished)
  1. Reds: Cut a total of 48 (4 7/8") squares. Sub cut each square diagonally once to get a total of 96 large triangles.
  2. Blues, greens, browns: Cut a total of 144 (2 7/8") squares.
  3. Cream backgrounds: Cut a total of 192 (2 1/2") squares and 240 (2 7/8") squares. Sub cut 96 of the 2 7/8" squares each diagonally once for a total of 192 small triangles. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the remaining 144 (2 7/8") squares.

Borders:
(Do not cut borders until you have pieced the quilt center together. Measure quilt top, then cut borders.)
  1. First inner border - cut 7 strips 1 3/4" WOF.
  2. Striped middle border - Fussy cut 3" wide on the straight grain of the fabric- 2 strips approximately 75" long and 2 strips 58" long. Cut so that the blue stripe on both sides of the vine is visible when stitched.
  3. Outer border - Fussy cut 8" wide on the straight grain of the fabric- 2 strips 75" and 2 strips 72 1/2" long.
    Binding - Cut 8 strips 2" to 2 1/2" WOF.

Piecing:
  1. Place the assorted background 2 7/8" squares right sides together onto the assorted medium to dark 2-7/8" squares. Stitch 1/4" on both sides of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line and press to the dark fabrics. You will get a total of 288 half square triangle combinations.
  1. Stitch 2 half square triangle combinations together with 2 (2-1/2") background squares to make a 4 patch. Make a total of 96 blocks (Unit A).
  1. Stitch 2 small background triangles to adjacent sides of a half square triangle unit. Press to the background triangles. Stitch unit to the large red triangles. Press to the large triangles. Make a total of 96 blocks (Unit B).
  2. Stitch 2 each Unit A's and Unit B's to make the block as diagrammed. Make a total of 48 blocks.

Stitch quilt center together in rows of 6 blocks across and 8 rows down. Turn the blocks to achieve the star configuration.

Borders: Carefully measure your quilt top before cutting and stitching the 3 border units. Inner border - Stitch the 1 3/4" strips together. Cut 2 pieces the length of the sides of the quilt top. Stitch and press to the inner border. Cut 2 pieces the width of the top and bottom of the quilt top. Stitch to the quilt and press to the inner border. The middle border is fussy cut from the straight grain of the fabric. This border is mitered. Be careful to have the vine in the center with blue on both sides of the design. The measurements given in the cutting instructions were approximate lengths. Cut strips long enough to allow for mitering the corners. Stitch to the sides first, then top and bottom, pressing to the middle border at each step.

The outer border is fussy cut from the straight grain of the fabric, but not mitered. Stitch to the sides first, then top and bottom, pressing to the outer border. Quilt as desired and bind.
